Welcome 2015!

Happy New Year!  It's hard to believe we are already this far into the school year.  We have hit the ground running (or dancing anyway) in the music room.  Here are some highlights...

Welcome Mrs. Townsend!

This week we welcome Mrs. Christina Townsend to our Rowe School Music family.  Mrs. Townsend is a music intern from the University of Southern Maine, where she will complete her Bachelor's Degree in Music Education this spring.  Mrs. Townsend brings with her an early childhood background and a lot of music experience.  Mrs. Townsend will be with us until May.

Grade One Highlights

  • Our focus this month is on how composers create a sense of energy and/or calm in music. Musicians will learn how composers use the musical opposites to create music that makes our bodies feel more energized or more calm.
  • First graders are ramping up practice time for the Rowe Show, which will be held April 14. More information to come as it gets closer, but mark your calendars now!
Kindergarten Highlights
  • Our focus this month is on dynamics, or volume, in music.  Musicians will learn fancy musicians words for loud (forte) and piano (quiet) and will listen to, sing and play a number of songs related to that concept.
  • Kindergarten musicians will begin to learn to read and write rhythms this month.  They will be learning to read patterns that use quarter notes (we call it "du") and barred eighth notes ("du-de").  This begins the journey into reading and writing the language of music that will continue through their time in the Yarmouth music program.

Great Concert Opportunity!

Attention First Grade Families:

Duke Ellington's rarely performed version of the Nutcracker Suite is being performed this Sunday, December 7 at 3 o'clock right in our very own Yarmouth Performing Arts Center. This performance is produced by and is a fundraiser for the Yarmouth Music Boosters, who do so much to support our music programs K-12. It is a perfect fit for grade one musicians, as we are just beginning our study of some of the more famous pieces in the traditional Nutcracker Suite.

Kindergarten Song Booklet Vol. 1

Grade One Song Booklet Vol. 2

The children have been very excited to get their hands on their song booklets.  Ask your child to share a favorite song (or three!) from music class with you!!

My Many Colored Days

A few weeks ago, we were fortunate to have some Music Education students from the University of Southern Maine work with us on a composition project. In this project, children worked in a group to create sounds to accompany one of the pages of Dr. Seuss's My Many Colored Days. Children were challenged to think creatively in sound and to use their musical imaginations to help the story come to life through music. Here's the final product!
