Great Concert Opportunity!

Attention First Grade Families:

Duke Ellington's rarely performed version of the Nutcracker Suite is being performed this Sunday, December 7 at 3 o'clock right in our very own Yarmouth Performing Arts Center. This performance is produced by and is a fundraiser for the Yarmouth Music Boosters, who do so much to support our music programs K-12. It is a perfect fit for grade one musicians, as we are just beginning our study of some of the more famous pieces in the traditional Nutcracker Suite.

My Many Colored Days

A few weeks ago, we were fortunate to have some Music Education students from the University of Southern Maine work with us on a composition project. In this project, children worked in a group to create sounds to accompany one of the pages of Dr. Seuss's My Many Colored Days. Children were challenged to think creatively in sound and to use their musical imaginations to help the story come to life through music. Here's the final product!

Song booklets are coming home with first graders this week.  Here's the link if you need another copy!  (Click on the word link)

October Update

We are moving and grooving in the music room this month.  Routines are set, instruments are explored and we are ready to dig deep into how music works!

 Kindergarten musicians are...

  • exploring tempo (fast and slow)
  • continuing to work on finding singing voices
  • working on using instruments appropriately and learning to play as part of a group
  • moving their bodies in beat-ful, beautiful ways
Grade One musicians are...
  • exploring how composers use the musical opposites to create music that has both unity and variety
  • exploring how to make our singing voices sound even better
  • continuing to work on instrument technique, beat and playing one thing while saying another
Thanks for letting me spend time with your amazing young musicians.  They are a treat!

No More Pie

Kindergarten singers are working on finding their singing voice.  One of the ways they do that is by singing echo songs, using the "magic microphone".  Singers try and make their voice sound like my voice.  We do this as a whole group and then again with brave solo singing voices.  Here's a kindergarten favorite, No More Pie.

September in the Music Room

I love the beginning of the school year!  Here's a peek at what's happening in the music room...

KINDERGARTEN MUSICIANS ARE...
  • learning routines that will keep us efficient and safe.
  • finding singing voices and are learning lots of songs.
  • learning how to play the triangle, tambourine, rhythm sticks and guiros.
  • moving their bodies, and playing instruments to the steady beat.
FIRST GRADE MUSICIANS ARE...
  • learning routines that will keep us efficient and safe.
  • revisiting the musical opposites we explored last year.
  • exploring classroom instruments and reviewing proper playing techniques.
  • getting our first grade singing voices in action!
It has been a pleasure getting to know your children these last few weeks.  As always, please let me know if you have any questions about your child's music education!

September Singers

Listen to these sweet kindergarten singers singing our Rowe School song, Safe, Kind, Helpful and Polite.  These children have only had two music classes, and we have spent less than 10 minutes on this song.  Aren't they amazing?

Almost ready!!!

Dear Rowe School Musicians,

Here's a sneak peek at the music room.  It's almost ready to have you come visit tomorrow morning for Open House!  My desk could use a little clean up, eh?

These are the risers.  You will sit here during music class.

All of the barred instruments are ready to go!
I have a few new instruments to introduce to you this year.

Just waiting for magical music making!

Uh-oh, Mrs. Troy.  Better get back to work...

Hope to see many of you tomorrow!
